Speechless - Steven Curtis Chapman(1999)

오늘 하루 종일 스티븐 커티스 채프먼 노래에 꽂혀서 여기저기 찾아듣느라 일을 못하고 있다. 찾아 듣는 김에 글 하나 쓰기로 했다.

이 노래는 1999년에 발매된 [Speechless] 앨범에 실린 곡이다. 우리나라에는 컨티넨탈싱어즈가 부른 '표현못해'라는 제목으로 많이 알려져 있었다. 2000년 초반쯤에 교회에서 학생회나 청년회에서 발표회 같은 거 한다고 하면 한번쯤 고려되던 곡이다. 빠른 탬포와 함께 특유의 스트링 섞인 강력한 기타사운드 때문에 춤추는 포인트 주기 좋았던 것 같다. 얼마 전까지 CCD 영상이라면서 돌아다녔는데 이번에 찾을래니 없어진 듯 하다. 하긴 저작권 문제됐을 듯. 요즘은 슈스케 출신 홍대광이 부르고 다니는 것 같다. 컨티넨탈 버전보다 원곡에 가깝다.

그런데 당시 앨범타이틀은 [Speechless]였지만 정작 1번트랙이었던 Dive에 밀려 1번이 아닌 2번트랙에 실려 있었다. 심지어 Dive는 뮤직비디오도 있지만 Speechless는 없다. 뭐 그만큼 Dive도 좋은 곡이니 한번 들어보길 추천한다. 

Speechless는 우리나라에서 컨티넨탈싱어즈 8집에 번역되어 실린 덕분에 가사를 이해하면서 듣기에도 많은 어려움이 없다. 후렴부 번역은 꽤 잘됐다. 앞부분 번역은 무슨 말인지 모르게 되긴 했지만... 채프만의 노래들은 가사가 좋은 곡들이 많다. 구조는 단순하지만 직접적이고 잘 다듬어져 있다. 게다가 워낙에 기타연주가 훌륭하기 때문에 기타연주 듣는 재미로 들어도 지루하지 않다.
